Our after school course for Grades 5-8 aims to instruct adolescent coders in the fundamentals of coding and its applications to specific programming languages. Our goal is to provide future programmers with the next step in their computer science education and expand their horizons on the near limitless boundaries of what can be accomplished with code. The languages covered within this course include HTML, CSS and Javascript.
Throughout the course students will be challenged with various exercises that will provide a foundation in web design and visual interactivity. The final project of the course will focus making a game of their own design. While exercises will be completed and monitored on an individual basis, students will be required to work in groups for the final project, challenging them to combine all the knowledge they have acquired throughout the course and work together to make one cohesive final product. Planning, teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking, are just some of the instrumental skills students will pick up by the time they’ve graduated from this course.
Throughout this course the students who participate will hone instrumental skills that were provided in the previous course in addition to picking up introductory knowledge in programming syntax for multiple computer languages. IT IS NOT REQUIRED FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE TAKEN THE GRADES 1-4 COURSE TO PARTAKE IN THE GRADES 5-8 COURSE, however the knowledge acquired from the Grades 1-4 course carries over and is expanded upon in the Grades 5-8 course. If a student wishes to pursue coding further, what they learn in this course will carry over to the Grades 9-12 course, where students will learn the industrial applications to the Computer Sciences and how to make a career out of coding.
